Actor Ron Perlman never takes recognition for granted. He’ll be honored at LCIFF this year.

Ron Perlman was contemplating what came next after three or four years of not working as an actor in the late 1990s.

If not for director Jean-Jacques Annaud, perhaps the Las Cruces International Film Festival would be honoring another entertainment industry giant during the eighth annual LCIFF next week.

Annaud cast Perlman as a soldier in the 2001 film ‘Enemy at the Gates’ based on the 1973 non-fiction book, Enemy at the Gates: The battle for Stalingrad. Perlman had already worked for Annaud twice, including his first movie role in ‘Quest for Fire’ in 1981 and the 1986 film, ‘The Name of the Rose.’

“I was heart broken, but once again, (Annaud) swooped in with this incredible, lovable and layered character in a rendering of the second World War and jump started a whole new chapter in my professional life,” said Perlman, who will receive the festival’s Outstanding Achievement in Entertainment Award on Thursday.

Previous winners of the award include Giancarlo Esposito, William H. Macy, Danny Trejo, Brendan Fraser, George Lopez, Cybill Shepherd, Richard Dreyfuss and Edward James Olmos.

“We try to select someone who is reflective of Las Cruces – hardworking, empathetic and talented,” LCIFF Executive Director Ross Marks said in an email. “Ron Perlman is the consummate, hardworking character actor, able to take on many different roles and personas.

“His long and storied career of almost 50 years is worthy of honoring and celebrating. His roles in the iconic series Sons Of Anarchy and feature film Hellboy will be eternal. He is the perfect face of the 2024 film festival.”

Perlman will make several appearances throughout the day in Las Cruces, including a presentation at New Mexico State University Center for the Arts at 2 p.m., that is free and open to the public. He will also host a Q and A before and after the screening of his 2004 film “Hellboy” and an evening reception where he will be presented the festival’s top award.

Actor Ron Perlman, known for roles in "Hellboy" and "Hand of God" will receive the Outstanding Achievement in Entertainment award during the 2024 Las Cruces International Film Festival.

“I am so genuinely thrilled to have made it into this business, who as a kid was always watching classic movies with my dad. There was a lot of fantasizing about what cool lives these people must of led,” Perlman said. “Their ability to capture peoples imagination and here I am in it.

“It is the cherry on top that a bunch of people are wanting to acknowledge me. I don’t take it for granted and I’m also thrilled.”
