There are actually a number of famous lesbian and bisexual women who were married to men at one point and time. Here are eight.
Frida Kahlo
We’d expect nothing less than a dramatic relationship from an artist, and Kahlo married, divorced and re-married painter Diego Rivera.
Life after men
Kahlo was bisexual and during her relationship with Rivera, she had affairs with both men and women.
Anne Heche
Heche actually came out as straight but between the years of 1997 and 2000, she was involved with Portia De Rossi’s current partner Ellen Degeneres.
Life…after women
After her relationship with Degeneres, Heche went on to marry Coleman Laffoon, whom she has one child with. The two divorced in 2007 and today Heche is involved with James Tupper, with whom she has an additional son.
Julie Cypher
The assistant director on “The First Power,” “Stand and Deliver” and “Dakota” was married to Lou Diamond Phillips, the star of “The First Power,” between 1987 and 1990.
Life after men
Today Cypher is married again to a man, Matthew Hale, but from 1990 to 2000, Cypher was in a relationship with Grammy-winning artist Melissa Etheridge. With the help of David Crosby, the two women had two children, to which Cypher gave birth.
Wanda Sykes
We hope the funny woman’s sense of humor carried her through her marriage to record producer Dave Hall. The two were together from 1991 to 1998.
Life after men
A decade after Sykes’ divorce to Hall, she announced that she was gay and one year after that, she married her partner Alex Sykes.
Meredith Baxter
One of the most famous mothers from a television nuclear family on “Family Ties,” Baxter was married to three men before coming out as gay. In order they were Robert Lewis Bush, David Birney and Michael Blodgett.
Life after men
In 2009, Baxter told the crew of the “Today” show that she was gay and had a live-in partner.
Portia de Rossi
Rossi was married to Academy Award-nominated sound engineer Mel Metcalfe for three years in the late 90’s.
Life after men
Rossi came out in 2005 and has been with Ellen Degeneres since 2008.
Alice Walker
The author of “The Color Purple” was married to Melvyn Rosenman Leventhal, a Jewish civil rights lawyer, between 1967 and 1976, with whom she had one daughter.
Life after men
Walker went on to be romantically involved with Tracy Chapman, a relationship the two were rather private about.
Billie Jean King
King is a professional tennis player, famous for beating Bobbie Riggs in the “Battle of the Sexes” after he criticized women in sports. She was married for over 20 years to Larry King, the founder of World Team Tennis.
Life after men
In 1981, King went public about her relationship with her secretary Marilyn Barnett. King was the first female professional athlete to come out as gay.
