Lawrence and Maroney started dating in May 2018. After less than a year of dating, they got engaged in February 2019 and tied the knot in a lavish ceremony in October of that year. Their son was born in 2022. However, the couple have never walked a red carpet together and are rarely seen in public.
However, we’ve gathered all you need to know about Maroney’s rural upbringing, his impressive career and his sweet relationship with Lawrence. So… who is Jennifer Lawrence’s husband, Cooke Maroney?
Maroney is an art gallery director
Since 2022, Maroney has been the director of Gladstone Gallery, a modern and contemporary art gallery with locations in New York, Brussels, and Seoul.
Gladstone houses works from a number of artists with high profiles in the art world including, Lena Dunham’s father, Carroll Dunham, Bjork’s ex Matthew Barney, and Richard Prince. Prior to joining Gladstone, Maroney previously worked at Gagosian Gallery.
“He’s definitely respected. He’s not a big player, but he’s a player,” a contact who reportedly knows Maroney from the art world told The Cut in 2019. “I’d say he understands what good art is, as opposed to a lot of art dealers who just like to go to parties and do deals. I know that he likes contemporary but I know he also appreciates modernism. I think he really has solid taste in art and he’s a very good art dealer, and I expect a fruitful career out of him.”
Maroney, who studied art history at NYU, followed in his father’s footsteps. James Maroney was previously an art dealer and the head of American paintings at Christie’s and Sotheby’s auction houses.
Maroney has celebrity friends… and, allegedly, an enemy
Maroney keeps his life pretty private and that includes his Instagram profile but his celebrity followers include Anna Wintour’s daughter Bee Shaffer, Derek Blasberg, and Paris Hilton. He has also been seen at art world parties with Hilton’s ex Stavros Niarchos, close friend of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry and actor-designer Waris Ahluwalia.
“He’s definitely fun-loving but I wouldn’t say he’s out of control,” a source told The Cut in 2019. “He likes to have fun, a young good New York guy who likes to participate and have fun.”
And here’s a random little fun fact about Maroney’s career for you, his art dealing allegedly caused a rift between Lawrence and his former friend Emily Ratajkowski.
In 2020, Ratajkowski released an excerpt of her memoir My Body in The Cut. In the chapter, the model recalled learning that artist Richard Prince had used a nude photo of her that she posted on Instagram in a collection of his without her consent. When Ratajkowski tried to buy the piece from a “big time gallerist” who she knew through their friends, she learned he had purchased it for himself.
“The giant image of me was hanging above the couch in his West Village apartment,” Ratajkowski wrote. “‘It’s kind of awkward,’ a friend of mine said, describing the painting’s placement in the gallerist’s home. ‘He, like, sits under naked you.’”
Well, according to a DeuxMoi post that surfaced in June 2021, that gallerist was Maroney. A source claimed that Ratajkowski’s comments had stirred a “mini feud” with Lawrence. “Under no circumstances are they to be invited to the same gathering,” the source claimed. “Jennifer is super annoyed and embarrassed that Emily indirectly named her husband Cooke Maroney as the guy that had her nude. Everyone in the art world read it and knew it was him too.”
Maroney was raised in Vermont
Maroney was born in New York City, on July 3, 1984, but moved to Vermont with parents James Maroney and Suki Fredericks when he was two years old. According a 2015 profile of James and Suki in Medium, the couple moved to Vermont in search of a simpler life.
“I had to choose between working and having someone else take my kids to the park, or go to the park with all the nannies,” Suki said of living in New York. After moving, Maroney’s parents set up Oliver Hill Farm and later welcomed Maroney’s younger sister Annabelle. According to a local Vermont outlet, Seven Days, the farm is one of the largest organic dairy farms in the state.
“At school, he was a quiet yet popular guy who was friends with lots of girls,” one of Maroney’s classmates told the Daily Mail in 2019. “He was never a big fan of being the center of attention. He’ll definitely do well with a big time actress and support her from the background.”
Maroney and Lawrence met in 2018
Lawrence and Maroney started dating sometime around May 2018 after meeting through a mutual friend. It was reported by Page Six that Lawrence’s best pal Laura Simpson set up the couple but the actress later revealed, in a 2023 interview with Interview Magazine, that No Hard Feelings director Gene Stupnitsky was the one who introduced them.
“She is smiling like I have never seen her do with any of her previous boyfriends,” a source told People of their growing romance in August 2018.
In February 2019, engagement rumors swirled when Lawrence was spotted wearing a ring. At the time, sources revealed that Lawrence was enjoying the quiet life with Maroney. “He’s a great guy,” a source told People. “He’s smart and funny and I think really keeps her on her toes and he doesn’t treat her like a celebrity like the other boyfriends did.”
“I definitely wasn’t at a place where I was like, ‘I’m ready to get married,’” Lawrence explained on the Naked with Catt Sadler podcast in June 2019. “I just met Cooke and I wanted to marry him. We wanted to marry each other, we wanted to commit fully.”
“He’s just the best person I’ve ever met in my whole life,” Lawrence told Entertainment Tonight that same month. “It was a very, very easy decision.”
They got married in October 2019
The couple got married in a private ceremony at the luxurious Belcourt of Newport mansion in Newport, Rhode Island with 150 guests including Adele, Kris Jenner, Emma Stone, Amy Schumer and Ashley Olsen. Lawrence wore a Dior dress, according to People.
Her rehearsal dinner included guests like Nicole Richie, Joel Madden, Cameron Diaz and Sienna Miller.
Lawrence later joked to E! News that she found being a bride “awful.” She said: “It’s so stressful. You’re not having fun. You’re just like, ‘Is that person having fun?’” She revealed that she feared people were too cold and, at her outdoor wedding rehearsal and even tried to encourage Silver Linings Playbook co-star Robert De Niro to go home.
“I looked over and I saw Bob, who doesn’t know anybody and he’s kind of wandering around, and I immediately was like, ‘No, this isn’t what he wants to be doing. I don’t want him here,’” she recalled. “So I went over and whispered, I was like, ‘Go home’ and he was nice—he like talked to my parents and was polite—but I was like, ‘Go.’”
In 2021, Lawrence gave a rare insight into their otherwise private relationship. “I really enjoy going to the grocery store with him,” she told Vanity Fair. “I don’t know why but it fills me with a lot of joy. I think maybe because it’s almost a metaphor for marriage. ‘Okay, we’ve got this list. These are the things we need. Let’s work together and get this done.’”
Lawrence and Maroney welcomed a son in 2022
Lawrence’s rep announced, in September 2021, that she and Maroney were expecting a baby and TMZ reported in February 2022 that they had welcomed a son.
That September, Lawrence confirmed in a Vogue interview that they named their son Cy after one of Maroney’s favorite artists, Cy Twombly, and gushed about being a first-time mom.
“The morning after I gave birth, I felt like my whole life had started over. Like, ‘Now is day one of my life.’ I just stared. I was just so in love,” she recalled. “My heart has stretched to a capacity that I didn’t know about. I include my husband in that.”
While pregnant, Lawrence told Vanity Fair that she plans to keep her child’s life private. “Every instinct in my body wants to protect their privacy for the rest of their lives, as much as I can,” she explained. “I don’t want anyone to feel welcome into their existence. And I feel like that just starts with not including them in this part of my work.”
Lawrence did, however, share praise Maroney’s parenting skills in a June 2023 interview with Interview Magazine. “Fortunately, my husband is the greatest father in the entire world,” she said. “So when I’m working, I don’t have any more guilt than the usual every day, all-day parent guilt.”
Maroney and Lawrence live in NYC
Maroney and Lawrence live in NYC’s West Village in a $21.9 million townhouse they purchased in 2020 after selling Lawrence’s Upper East Side penthouse.
However, the couple have seemingly been trying to either move homes or expand their property portfolio in the years since moving to the West Village. In 2021, they were photographed touring homes in the East Village. Then, in 2022 and again in 2024, they were seen looking at homes in Los Angeles neighborhoods, Bel Air and Beverly Hills.
They reportedly plan to have more kids
In a rare relationship update, a source told Entertainment Tonight in July 2024 that the couple are “super in love” and wanting to give Cy a sibling. “They make each other laugh and have the best time parenting together. They would love to have another kid and expand their family.”
