Whoopi Goldberg says Sister Act 3 is still in the works!
PEOPLE caught up with The View co-host, 68, at the Garden of Laughs event at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday where the actress gave an update on the latest installment of the film franchise.
“It’s still on the way! It’s percolating,” the comedian said on the red carpet regarding the status of the project.
“They have not said, ‘We’re over you and this movie,’” she quipped, seemingly referring to studio executives.
Giving a status update, Goldberg explained, “We’re still in the process of writing the script.”
When asked if she had a hand in that aspect, the actress told PEOPLE, “Yes and no.”
“It’s hard to do everything,” the EGOT winner explained. “And I like to think that I can, but I’ve come to the understanding that I can’t do as much stuff simultaneously, as I’d like to.”
Sister Act was released in 1992.
In the comedy, Goldberg stars as lounge singer Deloris Van Cartier, who must go into witness protection after witnessing a murder committed by her gangster lover. Placed somewhere no one would think to look, the entertainer ends up as a nun in a California convent, now going by the name of Sister Mary Clarence.

The film earned two Golden Globe nominations, and also stars Maggie Smith, Kathy Najimy, Wendy Makkena, Jenifer Lewis and Harvey Keitel, as well as the late Mary Wickes.
Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit was released in 1993. The sequel featured Goldberg reprising her role, as well as new additions to the cast with Lauryn Hill, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Alanna Ubach.

In December 2020, nearly 30 years after the original hit theaters, Sister Act 3 was confirmed — this time with Tyler Perry on board.
“I’m a little annoyed with how long this has taken me. It’s taking so long — like, I’ve done four movies since we started talking about this,” Perry, 54, told Entertainment Tonight in February.
He and Goldberg are producers for the upcoming film, along with Walt Disney Studios.
“When I’m outside producing with… you know, Disney’s a huge, wonderful company, but I really want to get this movie and Whoopi really wants to get this movie,” the filmmaker added.
Sister Act 2
Since the third installment was announced, The Color Purple actress has called on other past members to reprise their roles.
“I want to let Maggie Smith know that I’m holding the part of Mother Superior for you, because I just can’t do it with anybody but you,” Goldberg said during a January 2023 appearance on the U.K.’s Loose Women talk show.
And just last month, Abbott Elementary’s Sheryl Lee Ralph appeared on The View where Goldberg asked her to “come be part” of the third film after she previously starred in the sequel.
